Monte Serrat: "They Cannot Fall"

Helaman 5:12 And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.

We saw this scripture in action this week. Friday my companion and I were walking up a big hill under the blaring sun when we noticed some storm clouds gathering on the horizon. Rain is not something new, but we could see that they were approaching very quickly so we decided to find shelter. We saw that a member lived close so we start heading in that direction when the wind starts to pick up. We start running to the members house and it starts raining. Thankful she was home and let us in as it then beings to pour and have very strong winds.

We get to know this member a little better. She has been less active in the church for a few years and so we asked you shared a message. We shared this very scripture, but it is difficult to hear because of how loud the rain was. The power also went out in the middle of the message. At that moment I was very grateful that we had been able to find shelter and even though the winds were strong, I knew that we were safe.

When the rain died down a but we decided to venture out to try to visit another member who we knew lived close. The streets were covered with branches of broken trees and as we get to this ladies house, we see a young women from our words. She becons us in from the rain and tells us what happened. This member's house had been partly destroyed by the storm, tearing off part of the ceiling and knocking down parts of the wall. Everything in that room had gotten soaked and the house had filled up a little with water.

It was amazing to see that the response of the ward members had been almost instantaneous as people showed up to clear the damage and move things to safety before it began to rain again.

That day I really learned the importance of having a strong shelter and a firm foundation. I also could see that independent of the trials, God was working miracles in the lives of these people. I am grateful that he protected us during the storm and that he used us to help others.

Jesus Christ is our firm foundation. A lot of times we will pass through moments where the storms of life are so strong we can't hear over the wind and the rain. There will be moments were we are afraid because of thunder and lighting. The trials in our lives are real, but we need not be afraid. As this scripture promises, Christ is our rock. If we are built upon him, we can not fall.
