Sao Domingos: Teaching a Drunk Man

This week was a little sad when the baptism of our friend fell through but Sister Fernandes and I kept working and we were able to finish the week strong!

We have a couple that we are teaching that are awesome! The wife has learned a little bit about the church from watching a youtuber who is a member. She says that she loves the way this Mom raises her kids and that they go to church together every Sunday morning. This member also talked about having the missionaries over and she always bakes a cake for them. And so when our friend saw an advertisement on instagram to learn more about the church she was super excited. When we called her she asked us when we could come over and said she would bake a cake like the woman from youtube. We had a great lesson with her and her husband about the Plan of Salvation! And at the end she asked us when we could come back. We planned another lesson for Saturday and this time we brought a couple from the ward with us and it was amazing. The members were able to testify of prophets, the restoration, and the Book of Mormon and this couple is super excited to read. And... They came to church on Sunday!!! This couple was truly a miracle and a blessing in our lives and we are so excited to help them continue on this path!

We also taught a lesson to a Mom and her two sons after church (relatives of some members) and it was a sweet/interesting experience. The sons are older (16 and 13) but they do not have a religious background. And so we get to explain everything to them about the Bible, the prophets, Adam and Eve, and they are really excited to learn. As we were finishing our lesson with them one of the boys asked if we could do another study with them later that night over video call. And then if we could study again the next day! It is really amazing to see how excited they are to learn and to hear their prayers which are so simple and yet so sincere!

We have been focusing on and working with the members of our ward. This past pday we spent the whole day with the members, playing tennis and then making cookies. We had another fun day this week when we helped the members clean the Chapel and then afterwards we had a family night with them and they bought pizza! We also spent some time with one of these members who is a little older looking at her photos from when she served a mission. I love the members here in our ward so much and I will be sad one day when I have to leave them.

This week we had a very funny lesson with a very drunk man. It was online so no worries about safety. He called us and we were a little surprised because it has been a while since we have talked to him. We sat there and listened a little as he talked and then he goes... can we read the Book of Mormon. My companion said of course! He went ahead and started us off with a prayer and then told us where he wanted to read. In the middle of Alma.... one of the parts about the judgment of God. My companion starts reading and he cuts her off and says NO, READ SLOWER! And so she started again. At this point we are dying laughing. She stops after a verse but he asks her to keep going. He then stops her in the middle of a verse and goes, HOLD UP WHAT DOES THIS WORD MEAN? This man was paying more attention to us when he was drunk than he does when he is sober! It was a strange experience to say the least.

Stay safe out there,

Sister Pinkney
